Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews showed some love to another former Blackhawks player in Troy Murray, who is battling cancer.
There will never be another player in Chicago Blackhawks history to wear sweater No. 19, as former captain Jonathan Toews will have that number retired at some point in the future when his playing days come to an end.
Right now, Toews is continuing his NHL career with his hometown Winnipeg Jets, with whom he signed a one-year contract after announcing a comeback to the NHL following a two-year absence.
During a recent Hockey Fights Cancer night, Toews expressed support for former Chicago Blackhawks forward Troy Murray, who also wore sweater No. 19 during his career, as he battles cancer.
Murray played several years for the Blackhawks during his NHL career, wearing a Blackhawks sweater from 1981 to 1991, and had another short stint with the team in the early 1990s.
He also played for the first edition of the Jets, who are now technically the Utah Mammoth.
Jonathan Toews Will Return To Chicago's United Center In January
Toews, who was told by the Blackhawks that he would not be re-signed after his contract ran out in 2023, will make his official return to Chicago on January 19.
He last played at the United Center in April of 2023 against the Philadelphia Flyers, which was his most recent NHL contest until he returned to the game this fall and signed with the Jets.
Like his former longtime teammate Patrick Kane, Toews will get a lengthy video tribute and a chance to acknowledge the fans upon his return wearing a different sweater.
