The Chicago Blackhawks currently have Nick Foligno as their captain, but who will be his successor? It may not be Connor Bedard, per analyst Mark Lazerus, and that would surprise everyone.
The Chicago Blackhawks named veteran Nick Foligno as their 1st official captain after the departure of Jonathan Toews, but he won't be in the long-term plans of the team.
Most people assume that it will be Connor Bedard who eventually inherits the captaincy from Foligno, but Blackhawks analyst Mark Lazerus had another suggestion.
Lazerus floated the name of Frank Nazar as another possibility to inherit the captaincy from Foligno.
Nazar has all the intangibles of a captain.. but I still think it's going to end up on Bedard's jerseyit's just a matter if there will be one more transition captain between Foligno & Bedard.
Foligno has a year left on his contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $4.5 million. At 37, he doesn't have much hockey left in him, and it won't be long before the Blackhawks will have to name a new captain.
There are other possibilities for Blackhawks captain
In a recent fan mailbag, Lazerus named a few other Blackhawks players who could potentially inherit the captaincy from Foligno, including Connor Murphy and Alex Vlasic.
But Vlasic has emerged as a locker-room leader in the last couple of years and garnered about a quarter of the votes. The ascendant Nazar and stalwart Murphy were in a virtual tie after that. Murphy is by far the longest-tenured Blackhawks player and commands a lot of respect in the room, but he's also entering the last year of his contract and could be traded before the season ends.
