A trade completed between the Chicago Blackhawks and Maple Leafs has led to Toronto and their management looking quite foolishly as defenseman Sam Rinzel's panning out to be a true top-four defenseman.

On July 8th, 2022, the Toronto Maple Leafs would trade goalie Petr Mrazek to the Chicago Blackhawks as a cap dump.
The Blackhawks would send a 2nd-round pick in 2022, while the Maple Leafs would send their 1st-round pick attached to the veteran.
The result has been anything but a disaster for the Maple Leafs.
Kyle Dubas is a victim of his own hubris, however, as the 1st-round pick he would send to Chicago would end up being utilized to select Sam Rinzel in 2022 (25th Overall).
The 2nd-round pick would turn out to be Fraser Minten, whom Brad Treliving traded to the Boston Bruins for Brandon Carlo.
The Toronto Maple Leafs traded goaltender Petr Mrazek and their 2022 first-round draft choice to Chicago on Thursday for a Blackhawks' 2022 second-round selection.

Sam Rinzel's Status With the Blackhawks Hurts the Maple Leafs

Rinzel made the leap to the Blackhawks in 2025, at the end of the season, to suit up for the team. He'd play 9 games for the team and score 5 points (0-5).
The rookie defenseman acquired in the trade is set to compete in the 2025-26 Calder Trophy hunt, and played two seasons in Minnesota before he turned pro.
In 79 games with the Golden Gophers, he scored 60 points (12-48) and projects to be a top defenseman in the league.
While Mrazek found a small sliver of success in Chicago after a troubling stint in Toronto, with an .888 SV%, and 3.34 GAA.
Dubas has since found a job in Pittsburgh, with the Penguins, and with the start of a rebuild there, you wonder how he'll handle that one.
