Last week's news felt inevitable for Laurent Brossoit as he begins a conditioning stint with the Rockford IceHogs-but now we're getting a clearer picture.

The Chicago Blackhawks have granted Brossoit permission to speak with other NHL teams as they clearly signal he won't be part of their crease plan in 2025-26.
Brossoit, 32, signed with Chicago in July 2024 on a two-year deal carrying a US$3.3 million cap hit.
A meniscus surgery followed by a hip procedure wiped out his 2024-25 season and kept him off the ice until just recently.
Given that the Blackhawks have locked in Spencer Knight as starter and Arvid Soderblom as backup and even have a couple high-end prospects in the pipeline, there simply isn't room for a veteran third goalie.
With the IceHogs stint set to last up to 14 days, Brossoit could soon be on his way out of Chicago.
The IceHogs stop seems more like a goodbye than a proof-of-concept-the Blackhawks are reportedly shopping him while he works to regain his form.

Brossoit ready to land elsewhere

From a fan perspective it stings a little: Brossoit never actually suited up for the Hawks, yet now he's already being traded. But it makes sense-he signed to play, and Chicago has moved on since he put pen to paper.
Still, Brossoit isn't out of chances-far from it.
Teams in need of crease depth now have a veteran with a prior .927 save percentage in solid seasons.

Three clubs in particular make sense as landing spots for Laurent Brossoit

First up is the Winnipeg Jets, where Brossoit spent much of his late-career build-up. With their starter (Connor Hellebuyck) down long-term, Brossoit could slot in as a reliable stopgap.
Then there's the Edmonton Oilers, who've had trouble in net lately and could use a seasoned backstop as they chase playoff positioning.
Finally, a surprise candidate-the Utah Mammoth-which reportedly could use goaltending support as they try to break through in the Western Conference race.
No matter what, his chapter ends in Chicago.
The upcoming AHL stint will double as a showcase and farewell tour. I'll be watching closely - how Brossoit moves, how he stops shots, how quickly he regains his agility. That chase for redemption might finally get real.
