The Chicago Blackhawks are no strangers to drafting 3rd overall at the NHL draft

The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery is in the books, and the Chicago Blackhawks will once again have a top-3 pick after going through another frustrating year of losing.

They landed the 3rd overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL Entry Draft, a year after they picked 2nd overall, and 2 years after they picked No. 1 overall when they chose Connor Bedard.

Looking back at years past, the Blackhawks are no strangers to using the 3rd overall pick. Hall of Famer and all-time great Chicago forward Denis Savard was taken with the 3rd pick in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, followed by taking Eddie Olcyzk with the 3rd pick in 1984.

Future Chicago Stanley Cup winner Cam Barker was taken with the 3rd overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft; he was selected after both Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin were taken by the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.

One of the most consequential Blackhawks draft picks was taking Jonathan Toews 3rd overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft; he would eventually captain the team to 3 Stanley Cup wins in 2010, 2013 and 2015 while becoming one of the best players in team history.

While he's not technically retired from the game, his No. 19 sweater number will eventually hang in the rafters of United Center.

Kirby Dach would then be Chicago's next 3rd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, though his time with the Blackhawks wasn't memorable.
