Big changes could hit the crease in Chicago this week as veteran goalie Laurent Brossoit nears a return from surgery while the team's current netminders hold down the fort.

Brossoit's road back after hip and knee issues signals an ongoing dilemma for the Chicago Blackhawks' depth chart that already includes Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom-and some sharp roster math looms, including a trade.
He spent the entire 2024-25 season on injured reserve after meniscus surgery in August 2024, then underwent a second surgery this offseason to address a hip issue.
Now the chatter is heating up. As one post recently put it:
«On HNIC, Elliotte Friedman said that Laurent Brossoit will be sent down to the AHL in the next week or so for a conditioning stint. The #Blackhawks no longer have room for him and they've given him permission to seek a trade. Reminder that his cap hit is $3.3M.»

- Wally Mazurek
Right now Knight is playing strong and appears to be the full-time starter. In 2025-26 he has posted a .924 save percentage with a 2.42 GAA in 13 starts so far, and Soderblom offers a capable backup option.

Brossoit's return signals a trade to the Edmonton Oilers

If Brossoit clears conditioning in the next few days, the Blackhawks face a real decision.
The outcome: Brossoit gets sent to AHL Rockford for a conditioning stint and later becomes an Edmonton Oiler through a trade. Fans familiar with Brossoit know his 2023-24 season in Winnipeg ended with a .927 save percentage-his second straight year at that mark.
"Elliotte Friedman: Someone else to keep an eye on: Laurent Brossoit; there's no room for him in Chicago; goalie-needy teams will be watching."

- Sportsnet (11/26)
From a fan perspective, it feels like a waste not to see him at least appear in a Blackhawks uniform. He signed hoping to give Chicago veteran stability, but timing and injuries have stymied that.
In the short term, this just means more clarity-once Brossoit hits the ice, the Blackhawks' depth chart will tell the story.
