The 2026 NHL Draft is changing, and the Chicago Blackhawks will feel it as the league adjusts the draft format after last season.

Fans and teams wanted a smoother 2026 NHL Draft experience.
The NHL confirmed to Sportsnet that several structural changes are coming after feedback from clubs, broadcasters, and viewers following the 2025 draft.
The goal is to shorten the event and improve its overall flow.
One of the biggest changes is the removal of the virtual interview room that debuted last year. League officials felt it slowed down the broadcast and added cost without enough payoff for teams or fans.
Media access is also expected to tighten. Instead of multiple reporters conducting interviews, the NHL is considering using one designated interviewer to streamline post-pick coverage.
The league is also looking at redesigning the stage layout. Reducing how far prospects walk to the stage may sound minor, but the NHL believes small tweaks can save meaningful time across an entire round.

2026 NHL Draft format impacts Chicago Blackhawks

From a fan perspective, this feels like the league admitting the 2025 experiment missed the mark, and many supporters will welcome a tighter, more energetic draft night.
Another major proposal is compressing the schedule so that the first and second rounds are held on the same night. Rounds three through seven would then move to day two, making the draft feel more compact.
The NHL has not yet announced a host city for 2026, though Montreal is reportedly among the leading candidates. A final decision is expected later, with two or three cities still in consideration.
For rebuilding teams, the changes are mostly logistical rather than strategic. Scouting departments and draft boards will remain unchanged, even if the pace of selections quickens.
For the Chicago Blackhawks, who continue to stockpile young talent after selecting Connor Bedard first overall in 2023, the updated format simply means making their 2026 picks in a faster, more efficient environment.
The Blackhawks will still rely on patient drafting and development, but fans can expect a draft night that moves with purpose and keeps the spotlight firmly on the players.
