It looks as though fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs are experiencing what fans of the Chicago Blackhawks saw when forward Max Domi played for them earlier in his NHL career.
Like plenty of other Toronto Maple Leafs players, Domi is struggling to do much of anything positive right now. So far this year, in his third year of wearing a Maple Leafs sweater, Domi has just six points (3G, 3A) in 22 games, which is the exact number of points he's on pace for.
Domi was recently called out by analyst Todd Matthews for his failure to produce more:
"Right now, Domi is averaging over a giveaway per game, with 22 in 21 contests. That puts him on pace for 86 giveaways if he keeps turning the puck over at the rate he's been. It wouldn't be as big a deal if he were making up for his mistakes either through producing points or winning enough puck battles to generate more offense"
Domi and the Maple Leafs need to figure things out fast before their season goes too far off the rails.
Max Domi Has Played For The Blackhawks During His Career
Domi, who is the son of former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tie Domi, was taken by the 12th overall pick by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and he played the first few years of his career in the desert before being traded in 2018 to the Maple Leafs' divisional foe Montreal Canadiens for Alex Galchenyuk.
After playing for both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes, Domi signed a one-year deal with the Blackhawks in 2022 and played decently enough but often went through stretches of producing no points.
He also played for the Dallas Stars briefly before signing with the Maple Leafs in 2023.
