Chicago is quietly putting out the word: Laurent Brossoit doesn't need to stay under the Chicago Blackhawks' roof, and the asking price isn't very big.

After months off the ice, health issues and a crowded crease have pushed Brossoit toward the exit.
Brossoit signed a two-year, $6.6 million deal in July 2024, but knee surgery wiped out his entire 2024-25 season. Then a hip procedure delayed his return again. He has yet to log a single NHL game in a Blackhawks uniform.
This week the Blackhawks granted permission for other teams to speak with Brossoit's camp ahead of a conditioning stint with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs.
Then in a recent segment of «Saturday Headlines» on Sportsnet, analyst Elliotte Friedman laid out what it would take for another club to acquire Brossoit. Friedman said:
«Someone said to me, if you were willing to take the full number [$3.3m] for Laurent Brossoit a late round pick or future considerations; if you're asking for Chicago to retain... you'll probably have to do a little bit more.»
That cap hit of $3.3 million might limit options for some teams, but if Chicago tosses in some salary retention, the return for Brossoit could rise beyond a mere late-rounder. The Hawks have already sorted out their crease with Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom, so Brossoit's path to regular NHL action in Chicago is blocked.
Fans might see this as a low-stakes move, but for a club juggling cap space and trying to build forward depth, clearing Brossoit's roster slot and garnishing even a modest return makes sense.

Blackhawks open to a cap-friendly deal

If another team is fine absorbing Brossoit's full cap hit, Chicago asks only a late-round pick. If they want relief, the cost climbs a bit.
Getting something for Brossoit, who once posted a 15-5-2 record and a .927 save percentage in 2023-24, isn't about vanity.
It's about practicality. Knight and Soderblom hold the crease. Brossoit's contract and rehab history don't fit that picture. So the Blackhawks are letting him walk if the price feels right.
If a deal arrives soon, Chicago will get cap flexibility and a roster slot. It gives Brossoit a chance to reset elsewhere. That's the kind of clean break this situation needed.
