Connor Bedard stands at a crossroads in his young career, balancing a breakout NHL season with the very real possibility he could miss out on Canada's 2026 Olympic team in Milan, Italy.

The Chicago Blackhawks center has been one of hockey's most exciting young forwards this season, with 19 goals and 25 assists in 31 games before a shoulder injury sidelined him late in a game against the St. Louis Blues.
«What I can tell you is that, internally, Bedard's season opened some eyes,» Johnston explained on Insider Trading. «He definitely has some backers among the people making this decision, but I'm not sure at this point thatit's going to be enough to see him named to the initial roster of players on Dec. 31. Of course, injuries or a couple of other things could crop up in the meantime, but as of right now, it doesn't appear to the case.

«I'd say what's important is that Bedard works his way back from his shoulder injury. That January window is still vital to players not on the roster. Canada is going to identify some reserves in case of injury prior to the February start of this event, and Bedard certainly is very high in the mix in that conversation.»

Bedard, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss the rest of December with his shoulder. That timetable means he won't play again before Hockey Canada must submit its final Olympic roster by the end of the year.
In a season where he's among the NHL's scoring leaders and clearly lifting the Blackhawks above expectations, missing games at this moment couldn't come at a worse time for Bedard's Olympic hopes.
Fans and pundits alike have noted how hard it is to snub a player of his talent, especially knowing his scoring and playmaking could help Canada's attack in February.
«Team Canada's management group had another call slated for Thursday night, where they would go over some of these agonizing decisions that they still have to make.

«Up front, these are the four forwards that I believe are highest among the list of guys that were not at the 4 Nations Face-Off last year: Macklin Celebrini, Tom Wilson, Bo Horvat and Nick Suzuki. I think Celebrini and Wilson are as close to locks as there are, and then it's a question of: Can you take Horvat or Suzuki, or is there room for both? I'm not sure. I think there will be two to three changes, at most, up front from the 4 Nations.

«The other debate is this: if you are taking Tom Wilson, is there room on the roster for Wilson and Sam Bennett, and Brad Marchand, who all bring their own level of spice to the roster? As someone said to me today: Is it one of those three? Two of those three? Or do we take all three?»

Bedard battles injury and roster bubble

His absence has thrust Canada's selection committee into a tricky decision, because the forward group is deep with proven stars like Connor McDavid already on the preliminary list, and other younger contenders such as Macklin Celebrini pushing hard for spots.
From a fan's perspective this feels almost unfair: a 20-year-old elite scorer is flirting with missing the world's biggest stage not because of ability, but timing and health. The Blackhawks center has spoken openly about how much playing for Canada would mean, and teammates insist he's earned his shot.
Canada's brass must weigh potential Olympic success against the risk of carrying an injured player who may not be at full strength.
That's a difficult call for any GM, especially one as invested in winning gold as Doug Armstrong. The roster dialogue will only intensify as the deadline nears and Bedard continues his recovery.
