Laurent Brossoit and the Chicago Blackhawks trade chatter picked up this week, with the Anaheim Ducks suddenly mentioned as a possible landing spot by an NHL insider.
Frank Seravalli floated the idea during a Monday appearance, wondering out loud if Anaheim could make sense for Brossoit given their current goaltending uncertainty and ability to absorb money. It was framed as speculation, not a report, but it caught attention fast.
For Chicago, the timing matters. The Blackhawks are deep into a rebuild, and every veteran contract is evaluated through an asset-management lens. Brossoit, 32, signed a two-year deal worth $3.3 million per season last summer, money that is meaningful but movable.
Before any rumor takes off, context helps. Brossoit has appeared in more than 160 NHL games, mostly in relief roles. His career save percentage sits just under .910, with his best stretches coming behind structured defensive teams.
The Ducks' angle hinges on health and depth rather than performance. Seravalli specifically referenced an injury situation and Anaheim's flexibility to take on salary, which narrows the list of realistic partners quickly in-season.
From Chicago's side, the appeal would be simple. Turning a veteran goalie into a pick or young asset aligns with the long-term plan, especially if minutes can open for development options down the depth chart.
Laurent Brossoit and Anaheim Ducks cap flexibility
As a fan watching this rebuild closely, this is exactly the kind of move you expect Kyle Davidson to explore quietly before the deadline pressure ramps up.
Anaheim also fits the profile of a team that might prioritize stability over upside. If they believe Brossoit can give them league-average goaltending for stretches, that has value in a volatile Western Conference race.
The risk, of course, is performance inconsistency. Brossoit has posted strong runs, including playoff relief appearances earlier in his career, but he has also battled injuries and uneven regular seasons.
Seravalli's comment does not guarantee talks are active. It does, however, confirm that rival executives are at least thinking about Brossoit as a viable option rather than dead money.
For Chicago, that alone is progress. Veteran contracts are only useful if someone else believes they can help now.
If this goes anywhere, it will likely develop quietly and closer to the deadline, but the door is clearly open for the Blackhawks to listen.
