It looks like old ties and open options might pull New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin back toward Russia, even as he remains a top scorer in the Big Apple.

The 34-year-old winger's free-agent status has sparked talk that Panarin could return to Russia rather than chase another big NHL contract.
Panarin has not dismissed the possibility, admitting recently that it is «hard to say right now what's coming next," the star forward told New York Rangers reporter Mollie Walker.
His current deal with the New York Rangers expires this summer after a seven-year, US$81.5 million pact signed in 2019.
Meanwhile, he continues to produce, sitting at or near a point-per-game pace and tied for the team lead in scoring with 26 points as of late November.
New York Post
Former NHL forward Alexei Kovalev has stoked speculation further, noting the whispers among some in Russia that Panarin may be ready to leave the NHL entirely.
«There are even talks that he wants to leave the NHL altogether and go back to Russia. I don't know if it's true, but that's what people here are saying,»

Kovalev questioned whether Panarin truly feels at home in New York anymore, recalling how comfort and familiarity once shaped his own career decisions.
He implied that Panarin's priorities might have shifted-from money and fame toward a more comfortable life back home.

Panarin weighing NHL exit

From a Blackhawks fan's perspective the idea has extra weight.
Panarin delivered some of his best seasons wearing the Chicago sweater, reminding those of us who watched him rise what true offensive flair looks like. The thought of him returning to Russia leaves a bittersweet taste-respect for his personal decision but also a tinge of «what might have been.»
If Panarin does hit the open market and opts to head overseas, the Rangers will lose a star playmaker heading into critical playoff years. If he stays, New York must still bridge a contract gap that seems increasingly wide.
Right now Panarin's future remains blurry. But one thing feels clear: whether he signs another NHL deal or heads back to Russia, he'll always be remembered as elite talent throughout the Blackhawks and Rangers organization.
