The NHL and NHL Players Association started the player assistance program in 1996. The joint-funded program assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.

Carey Price and many other NHL players have been inducted into the program which covers recovery for substance abuse, mental health and also family matters. At times it may occur when a player is coming off a lengthy serious injury, as they may have been on pain killers for a long period of time, or as mentioned-it could be any personal matter.
The NHL released information today that Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana has been placed in the NHL's player assistant program, Vrana is coming off a lengthy shoulder injury that has had a huge impact on his career.
