When NHL players sign with new teams during unrestricted free agency, they aim to make a positive impression on the fan base and set a great example. Usually, this begins with a good presser, where players may make funny comments to showcase their personality or express their love for the city and their desire to bring a Stanley Cup home.

However, there are moments when a player needs to stand out amidst tragedy. Such was the case when former Canucks player Luc Bourdon tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident just three months after his 21st birthday, leaving the team devastated.

This brings us to Ian Cole, who chose to sign with the Canucks this offseason. When asked which number he would like to choose, he expressed his desire to wear the number 28. The Canucks tweeted out his response, and what happened next showcased his class and understanding.

Cole's gesture demonstrated that he believed it was the right thing to do. He signed a one-season, $3 million deal with the Canucks. At 34 years old, the defenseman has played for several teams including St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Colorado, Minnesota, Carolina, and Tampa Bay.

Throughout his career, he has played 748 games, scoring 32 goals, providing 150 assists, and accumulating 182 points. Additionally, he holds a +144 rating and has amassed 683 penalty minutes.
