Insider Thinks Montreal should look to Ottawa for inspiration in re-signing Caufield
TSN's Mike Johnson suggests Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens should look at Tim Stutzle's contract for inspiration when it comes to re-signing Cole Caufield. In September, the Ottawa Senators signed the 20-year-old forward to an eight-year, $66.8 million contract. Stutzle's contract has an AAV of $8.35 million. The German left-winger scored 22 goals and 36 assists in 79 games last season. This type of contract would be fair for both Caufield and Montreal.
Montreal's Cole Caufield will be an RFA at the end of this season. After a slow start to the 21-22 season, the American winger scored 23 goals and 20 assists in 67 games. He has already recorded three points in the first three games this season. The former 2019 first-round pick has been outstanding for the Habs so far. He has proven that he is a goalscorer in this league.
Montreal should try to sign him as soon as possible. He could demand an even bigger contract if they do not sign him soon. Imagine what Caufield would demand if he scores 30+ goals this season at only 21 years old. Caufield will get the big bucks, sooner rather than later!
