Sam Lafferty has been a pleasant surprise since being traded to Chicago from the Pittsburgh Penguins last season. Lafferty was acquired by Kyle Davidson in exchange for struggling prospect Alex Nylander.

Since coming to Chicago, Lafferty tallied 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 46 games played. While Lafferty may not be the best skater in terms of offensive production, he brings a physical presence to the lineup that the Blackhawks desperately need. Lafferty in a grinder who isn't afraid to throw his body around to make a play, win puck battles in the corner, or position himself right in front of the blue paint to attempt a screen on the goalie. General Manager Kyle Davidson is a huge fan of Lafferty's speed and style, leaving the coaching staff with the ability to play him up and down the lineup on a nightly basis.
Since the Blackhawks appear to be «all-in» on the rebuild, Lafferty should see a huge increase in minutes, which should result in an increase in offensive production. Lafferty is also only 27 years old, which could put him in a situation that can play out two ways. Either he continues to play with a high motor and finds himself in the bottom six when this team is ready to compete, or he could be dangled at the trade deadline. Whatever happens, Lafferty is an interesting player to keep an eye on this coming season.
