Minnesota Wild announce $34M contract extension and it confirms the Chicago Blackhawks scored big with Knight

The Minnesota Wild have extended goaltender Filip Gustavsson to a substantial deal just days after extending Kirill Kaprizov.

General manager Bill Guerin revealed that he wasn't scared to spent the big bucks when he inked forward Kirill Kaprizov to an NHL record-breaking contract extension worth a whopping $17M per season AAV.

Kaprizov, 28, is considered generational talent by some, and is considered the face of the Wild franchise.

In order to not run themselves cap dry, as they did with Zach Parise and Ryan Suter many years ago due to them receiving outrageous contracts, the Wild must be smart handing out further contract extensions to Kaprizov's linemates.

That also goes for Kaprizov's goaltender, who just received a hefty contract extension that could very well come back to haunt GM Bill Guerin.

Filip Gustavsson, who has only had one NHL season over 21 wins in his career, has earned a $34M contract.

Filip Gustavsson's extension highlights Spencer Knight's team-friendly contract with the Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks' recent signing of Spencer Knight has been heavily criticized, but Gustavsson's newest extension may take plenty of steam off.

Knight, 24, received a cap hit that came in at just $5.833M AAV, nearly $1M less expensive than the Wild's extension for Gustavsson, 27.

This signing highlights Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson's ability to secure steal deals, including his offseason extension of Ryan Donato, who scored 31 goals last season, to a $4M extension.
