General manager has just accidentally revealed Mike Sullivan's next NHL destination
One National Hockey League general manager has spilled the beans on where now-ex-Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan will be landing for next year.
The Pittsbrugh Penguins made a notable change in leadership, moving on from coach Mike Sullivan after he spent nearly 10 years on the job.
He had served as Pittsburgh's head coach since December of 2015 when he replaced Mike Johnston; he subsequently led the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup wins, but he's failed to help them earn a playoff berth in each of the last 3 years.
In the meantime, several clubs are in need of a new head coach, including the Vancouver Canucks after Rick Tocchet informed them that he was not coming back for next year.
But according to recent comments made by Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford, Sullivan likely won't be heading back to the West Coast to join the Canucks where he once served as an assistant coach.
In fact, Rutherford revealed that Sullivan prefers to stay on the East Coast.
I know my good friend Mike Sullivan does not want to leave the East. He's a real good family man. I talked to him yesterday - not about coming here. Talked to him when he left Pittsburgh, and I know he wants to stay in the East.
This makes things interesting, considering that a pair of teams that are looking for a new bench boss include the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers.
Count the Blackhawks out due to his choice of location, unfortunately.
The Rangers terminated coach Peter Laviolette a year after he helped them win the President's Trophy as the NHL's best team and advance to the Eastern Conference Final; they failed to earn a playoff spot this year.
Meanwhile, the Bruins fired coach Jim Montgomery in late November and replaced him with assistant coach Joe Sacco on an interim basis; he also failed to help lead the Bruins to the playoffs.
Don't be surprised to see Sullivan land with either the Rangers or Bruins after this latest revelation from Rutherford.
