Per a new report from NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the New York Rangers aren't in a hurry to get a new contract done for forward Artemi Panarin, who is in the last year of his current deal.

There will be plenty of speculation about the future of forward Artemi Panarin with the New York Rangers, as he's in the last year of his current deal.
The Rangers have had an inconsistent start to the year, which started with three straight shutout losses at home at Madison Square Garden, just short of a dismal NHL record.
Right now, they're 6-5-2, 5th place in the Metropolitan Division.
Per a new report from NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the Rangers aren't in a big hurry to try and negotiate a new contract for Panarin.
"The New York Rangers have a ton of respect and appreciation for what Artemi Panarin has done for them, and that's not to say it won't continue past this season. But for the moment, my sense of the situation is that it's very early in the season under new head coach Mike Sullivan, the Rangers want to see how things go and therefore are not in a hurry to get going more seriously on talks to extend the pending UFA winger."

LeBrun then said that term could be the biggest disconnect between the two sides.
Panarin turned 34 on Thursday. I don't think he'll be open to a short-term deal, which would probably be the Rangers' preference. -Pierre LeBrun

So far this year, Panarin has seven points (2G, 5A) in 13 games played.

Artemi Panarin Is Rumored to Want As Big A Deal As He Can Get

Based on the latest reports, it doesn't sound like Panarin will be willing to take a discount on his next contract, wherever it is.
Right now, his AAV (average annual value) on the 7-year deal he signed in 2019 is $11,642,857.
