Connor Bedard's upcoming contract extension could surprise many Chicago Blackhawks fans.

Currently in the final year of his entry-level contract, Connor Bedard will be looking for a new deal soon.

With NHL stars across the league signing at a wide range of salaries, and the changes to the salary cap landscape, it's hard to predict what Bedard's next contract with the Chicago Blackhawks will look like.

NHL insider Chris Johnston recently mentioned that he won't necessarily sign an eight-year contract, with a five-year deal a potential option as well:

"It's not a foregone conclusion he'll sign eight years. I'm sure the Blackhawks will want that, but his side might want a five-year deal." - Chris Johnston

In 14 games so far, the 20-year-old forward has tallied 18 points, including seven goals, with a +7 +/-, the best season start of his NHL career

Connor Bedard's Next Contract Could Surprise Fans

The Chicago Blackhawks' first overall pick in 2023, Connor Bedard, has shown that he reached another step of his development.

Last night, following the Hawks' 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks, Chicago's head coach Jeff Blashill once again praised Bedard for his consistency and commitment:

"Connor has been consistently, game in and game out, committed to winning hockey. He's competed extraordinarily hard, he's done all the kind of winning things. He hasn't been perfect but, man, he's done a lot of good winning hockey habits, and he's been rewarded offensively because of it, and I think we've been rewarded as a team because of it."

There's no doubt that he could sign a big contract with a high salary well above the $10M AAV range.

However, with renowned committed players like Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby, or more recently with the Montreal Canadiens' young star Lane Hutson, who have the team's success at the top of their priority list, agreeing to play at a reasonable salary, there's a case to be made that Bedard could sign for less than $10M a year.
