Chicago Blackhawks complete surprising move involving top prospect that confirms his fate in the NHL

The Chicago Blackhawks completed a surprising move involving a top prospect that likely confirmed his fate in the NHL for the next season.

On July 21st, the Kitchener Rangers officially announced that Jack Pridham will be returning to the OHL for the 2025-26 season. That update, while expected by some, all but confirms the Blackhawks' decision to hold off on signing him to an entry-level contract, at least for now.

Pridham, a 2024 third-round pick by Chicago, had a strong season in Kitchener after joining the Rangers from the BCHL. The Toronto native had an impressive tally of 54 points in just 48 games and looked every bit like a high-upside NHL prospect.

His development path was anything but traditional. Originally planning to go the NCAA route with Boston University, Pridham pivoted to the OHL after the NCAA opened its doors to CHL players.

At Blackhawks development camp earlier this summer, Pridham made it clear he was looking to earn a contract.

"After a long decision with my family, I decided I'm not going to go to Boston anymore. I liked my game in Kitchener this year and I want to put my best foot forward to try to earn a contract with Chicago, and if not, then the plan will be back in Kitchener for one more year."

Chicago clearly sees potential in Pridham, but sending him back to junior suggests they want to see more before committing an NHL contract.

Still, he'll get his chance. Pridham will be at the Blackhawks' training camp, where he'll do all he can to earn a deal.

The Kitchener Rangers announced:

"Overage skaters, Jakub Chromiak and Jack Pridham will be returning to the club in August barring any player making the jump to the professional level during NHL training camps."
