Chicago Blackhawks assign goaltender to the AHL's Rockford IceHogs

At 32 years old, the Canadian netminder hasn't played an NHL game since 2023-24, and that history clearly influenced teams on the waiver wire.

Chicago originally brought Brossoit back from injury with the hope he could stabilize the crease, but that plan shifted after Spencer Knight became the No. 1 and Arvid Soderblom and Drew Commesso pushed for more opportunity.

Before the waiver placement, Brossoit had skated with Rockford as part of a conditioning assignment after missing significant time with hip and knee injuries.

That conditioning stint showed he can still play, but the NHL hasn't seen him in action in over two seasons, and teams passed on his waiver eligibility as a result.

Fans have mixed feelings here in Chicago, some glad he gets playing time, others wondering if he will ever get another NHL chance.

Under the new assignment, Brossoit will report back to Rockford of the AHL, where he can keep form and stay visible for a potential trade partner.

The Blackhawks will hold onto his contract, but clearing waivers also gives Chicago roster flexibility and opens the door for a depth goalie acquisition if needed.
