Good news for the Chicago Blackhawks development pipeline with a young forward earning a shot at the international stage. AJ Spellacy of the Windsor Spitfires has been named to the preliminary roster of Team USA ahead of the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship.

This recognition reflects a strong season with the Spitfires and growing respect from USA Hockey scouts.
Spellacy, a 2024 third-round pick (72nd overall) by the Blackhawks, signed his entry-level contract earlier this year. He's shown solid size, speed, and physical play-the traits that landed him in the 28-man camp mix for Team USA. Many in Chicago expect him to compete for a bottom-six wing role if he makes the final cut.
Meanwhile, across the border, another Blackhawks prospect saw his hopes fade.
Marek Vanacker, the Blackhawks' 2024 first-round pick, was active with Team Canada during the recent World Junior Summer Showcase-and even scored in Canada's 6-2 win over the U.S. squad.
Despite that, Vanacker did not make Canada's final World Junior roster, according to recent coverage.

Spellacy gets the call; Vanacker waits in the wings.

For Blackhawks fans, Spellacy's invite feels like a win for the organization's long-term plan. His blend of grit, size, and steady two-way play matches what many clubs look for in a bottom-six forward.
If he locks down a spot, it adds depth and hope for the Blackhawks' future.
Meanwhile, Vanacker's snub stings a bit. He's been among the OHL's top scorers this season and showed flashes internationally. But Canada is stacked at forward, and sometimes even good numbers don't guarantee a slot.
The World Juniors camp will be a proving ground for Spellacy. If he earns a final roster spot, it could be the first step toward a Blackhawks NHL debut down the line.
