A fresh, hockey-themed playroom at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab brings smiles to patients young and old, highlighted by the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation's big reveal this week. It's a reminder that hockey's reach goes well beyond the rink and deep into the community in meaningful ways.

Earlier this week patients and families at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab stood in a room transformed by vibrant colors, new furniture, and energizing Blackhawks décor, a space now built for play, creation, and connection during recovery.
The renovation reflects a long-standing partnership between the Blackhawks Foundation and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, one focused on adaptive sports support, critical resources, and programs meant to help people thrive while healing.
Chicago Blackhawks Foundation Executive Director Annie Davis-Korelc said the moment showed that what happens off the ice matters just as much as what happens on it and emphasized the Foundation's commitment to making hockey inclusive for everyone.
Players from the Blackhawks joined the ribbon cutting, greeting fans and patients with smiles, autographs, and shared laughter, bringing energy to the pediatric floor and making the day feel truly special.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno said being there was inspiring, putting the regular grind of the season in perspective and reminding the team why community work matters so much, especially around the holidays.
Patients got a first look at the upgraded space, took part in activities like coloring and sled hockey demonstrations, and built memories with players over video games and laughs.
Clinicians on the pediatric floor were treated to a catered lunch, a small gesture of thanks for their dedication to supporting healing day in and day out.
Though the celebration lasted an afternoon, the impact of the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation Playroom will be ongoing, offering a welcoming retreat for patients and families throughout their recovery journeys.
